![]() "We're right back where we were, the only difference is people are more frustrated," he said. That frustration could continue throughout the year as schools grapple with COVID-19 amid sessions with no mask or social distance mandates from the state.ĭetwiler said the school will continue revisiting those policies, noting that emotions run high for those who support students wearing masks while many still do not support mask wearing. "It's tough, it's hard to step backwards into what has been almost a year and a half of this uncertainty." We were looking forward to that," Detwiler said. "I think we all have to admit psychologically this summer, I think we all sort of got used to the idea that we might get our lives back and get some normalcy. Frustration continues as plans get disrupted He said it is possible that staff shortages could lead to more virtual learning as it takes more than teachers and students to operate a school. Going into the new school year, Detwiler said this summer was perhaps the most challenging he's experienced at FCS to find teachers to fill vacancies.Īdditionally, Detwiler said the substitute list for teachers, cooks and bus drivers is among the shortest he's seen. Shortages of substitute teachers, bus drivers, kitchen staffĪside from cases among students and teachers, Detwiler said the district has seen a shortage of substitute teachers and bus drivers as well as cooking staff.Īnd the food supply chain is being disrupted by the virus, limiting the district to planning meals on a weekly basis as opposed to a monthly calendar while companies struggle to keep food supplies going.ĭetwiler said even without the pandemic, hiring would be an issue, but amid the latest surge in COVID-19, staff shortages have been exacerbated by people either getting sick and being unable, deciding to not work due to potential health risks, or seeking jobs elsewhere. Moving forward, Detwiler said virtual or hybrid learning could become a reality as the delta variant of COVID-19 continues its spread. "I know that's disruptive for families, but unfortunately, that's where we are." "Families really need to have a plan in case we have to shut one of the elementaries down," Detwiler said of potential virtual learning. One issue Detwiler said the district will have to prepare for is the possibility that siblings of the middle schoolers in quarantine could have exposed a family member in a different grade, such as elementary school or Ross High School students, although Detwiler said those buildings remain open to in-person learning. But the rates take a sharp decline for those age birth to 18, of whom 13.22% have been vaccinated. Vaccination rates have been lagging in Sandusky County, with around 47.85% of the population in vaccinated. It's possible the quarantine could have been avoided as the vast majority of those students are eligible to receive vaccines, which have been approved for emergency use for those 12 and older. if we think it's hitting a particular building hard, we think we can take a break in that building." Quarantine could have been avoided "When it becomes hard to manage administratively, it's kind of the tipping point, but obviously just the health factor. "When getting to that kind of numbers, it's hard to manage," Detwiler said. Superintendent Jon Detwiler said students will learn virtually this week and the district will re-evaluate the health of students and staff in quarantine before returning to in-person learning.ĭetwiler said the issue stems from someone bringing COVID-19 into school and, through contract tracing, identified around 125 students and staff who had come into contact directly or indirectly. Two weeks into the new school year, Fremont Middle School students have been moved from in-person to virtual learning.Īround 125 students and staff are in quarantine this week, forcing the Fremont City Schools to go to virtual learning for grades 6-8 as the district hopes to avoid a severe outbreak of potential COVID-19 cases or exposure to someone with COVID through contact tracing. ![]()
